Story by Tsaone Basimanebotlhe

BOTSWANA: The Assistant Minister for State President and also a Member of Parliament for Gaborone Bonnington North, Maipelo B. Mophuting, has been elected to the Bureau of women Parliamentarians at the ongoing Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly yesterday, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The elections were conducted to replace representatives whose term of office came to an end in March 2025. The Bureau of Women Parliamentarians ensures that issues affecting women form part of the IPU’s priorities. It organises the work of the forum of women Parliamentarians. This forum meets twice a year at the IPU’s Assembly held in April and October). The Bureau also works to make the IPU more aware of gender issues by developing a sustained programme on women’s issues and to promote greater participation of Members of Parliament in all its senior posts.

Mophuting is currently in Tashkent, Uzbekistan for the 150th IPU Assembly.
