Parliament Hails Black Queens, Approves Deputy Ministers, and Advances Social Protection Bill

The Parliament of Ghana, at its Fortieth Sitting of the Second Meeting, witnessed a series of significant developments, including commendations to Ghana’s senior women’s football team, approval of deputy ministerial appointments, and continued debate on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review.

The Parliament of Ghana, at its Fortieth Sitting of the Second Meeting, witnessed a series of significant developments, including commendations to Ghana’s senior women’s football team, approval of deputy ministerial appointments, and continued debate on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review.

Delivering a statement on the Floor of the House, Minister for Sports and Member of Parliament for Buem, Hon. Kofi Adams, applauded the Black Queens for their exceptional performance at the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where they clinched the bronze medal. His remarks received bipartisan support.

In a gesture of appreciation, Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin announced a personal cash donation of GH₵100,000 to the Black Queens, praising the team’s resilience and dedication.

Final Set of Deputy Minister Nominees Approved

Parliament unanimously adopted the sixteenth report of the Appointments Committee, thereby confirming the final batch of the President’s nominees for deputy ministerial positions. The approved nominees include:

  1. Ms. Dorcas Toffey, MP – Deputy Minister-Designate for the Ministry of Transport
  2. Mr. James Gyakye-Quayson, MP – Deputy Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs
  3. Mr. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, MP – Deputy Minister-Designate for the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation
  4. Professor Grace Ayensu-Danquah, MP – Deputy Minister-Designate for the Ministry of Health

The approvals reflect consensus on the nominees’ capacity to support the executive in implementing policy objectives.

Social Protection Bill Advances

In legislative business, the House adopted the Report of the Committee on Gender, Children, and Social Welfare on the urgency of the Social Protection Bill, 2025. The Bill subsequently progressed to the second reading stage, paving the way for detailed consideration and potential passage in the coming days.

Mid-Year Budget Review Debate Continues

Members of Parliament continued the debate on the Mid-Year Review of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, as presented last week by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson. The review outlines updated fiscal policies and adjustments in expenditure targets in response to current economic conditions.

Minority Holds Press Conference on Budget Review

In a related development, the Minority Caucus held a press conference to respond to the contents of the Mid-Year Budget Review. The group raised concerns about the government’s fiscal strategy and called for greater transparency and accountability in the implementation of economic policies.

Parliament is expected to conclude debate and take a decision on the Mid-Year Budget Review in the coming sittings.
