STORY BY – THOBOLOKO NTS’ONYANE

On Monday, Lesotho marked Parliament Day in Botha-Bothe District, a place of great historical importance. Historians say this is where the founder of the Basotho nation, King Moshoeshoe I used to meet with his council of ministers to discuss and plan matters of the nation, symbolising what is regarded as the first Parliament of Lesotho in the 1800s.

The event was graced by current presiding officers of both Houses of Parliament, as well as former presiding officers. Among present was Hon Sephiri Motanyane, longest serving Speaker who has served in Parliament since 1965, before Lesotho attained her independence. The celebration honoured the country’s parliamentary history and reflected on the role of Parliament in shaping the nation.
