Khalid Akhsas, Chargé d’Affaires and Head of Mission, Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Freetown, on Monday, 2nd June 2025, paid a courtesy call on the Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas, Speaker of Sierra Leone Parliament.
In his address, Khalid Akhsas, Chargé d’Affaires and Head of Mission, Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco, informed the speaker of the House of Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas that the United Kingdom had endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal under the Moroccan Sovereignty. He said such milestone endorsement was expressed in a Joint Communiqué signed on Sunday in Rabat, by the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, David Lammy, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal.
“I believe that this is an influential, strong support emanating from a United Nations Security Council Permanent Member that carries a great significance as the third permanent U.N. Security Council member to endorse Morocco’s autonomy Proposal under Moroccan Sovereignty”, he said.
He said the momentum and level of support, and awareness of the rightness of the Moroccan proposal represent the right time to settle this long-frozen regional dispute in order to establish a lasting peace and achieve a definitive solution to this artificial issue. He also used the opportunity to inform the Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Slomon Thomas regarding potential training opportunities for Parliamentary Staffers, and also establishing the Common Morocco-Sierra Leone Parliamentary Group with the view of fostering diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.
In his response during the courtesy call, the Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas welcomed the team to his office and parliament by extension. He considered the bold move by the United Kingdom in endorsing Morocco as a laudable move. The Rt. Hon. Speaker equally commended the United Kingdom’s endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan. The Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas also commended Morocco’s proposed training opportunities for Parliamentary Staffers. Speaker Thomas expressed elation for the initiative of establishing a Common Morocco-Sierra Leone Parliamentary Group, which is geared towards solidifying the diplomatic relations between the two nations.
