Accra, Ghana – Alhaji Adam Iddrisu, Editor of Debate Chamber Reporting at the Parliament of Ghana, has been elected President of the Commonwealth Hansard Editors Association – Africa Region (CHEA-AR). His election took place at the end of the Association’s 11th Biennial Conference, which concluded in Accra, Ghana, and he will serve for the next two years.

Speaking after his election, Mr. Iddrisu highlighted plans by the new administration to revive dormant Legislative Assemblies and expand the Association’s membership across the continent.

He noted that while the Republic of Togo is not yet a member despite joining the Commonwealth, efforts are underway to bring them on board. He cited examples such as the Eastern Cape Legislature of South Africa and Rwanda, where strong advocacy is ongoing, and confirmed that Nigeria’s Federal Parliament—dormant in the Association for the past decade—has now rejoined.

Mr. Iddrisu also revealed that CHEA-AR has amended its constitution to include regional parliaments. These include the East African Legislative Assembly, which was once part of the Association, and the SADC Parliamentary Forum.

Additionally, he announced plans to extend invitations to the ECOWAS Parliament and the Pan-African Parliament, emphasizing the critical role of parliamentary editors of debates in strengthening capacity and fostering idea-sharing across Africa.

“This is about building a formidable association that can provide the needed services for our parliaments,” he said.
